Flip Wilson was a very popular, funny comedian back in the 1960’s known for his humorous tag line,
“The DEVIL Made Me Do It!!”
While it was always good for a laugh, is that what the Bible says?
Actually, there is a bit of truth to it in that there are spiritual forces that do tempt us,
but as this verse from James points out, the vast majority of the time, it is our internal desire that
causes us to be tempted to do something that we know is wrong. Unfortunately, this is something that we have
all inherited that is part of our human nature. (Romans 5:19)
So while the Devil may tempt us he doesn’t 'make us' sin,
but it is our weak nature that leans towards causing us to continue to sin, but given this vicious cycle,
fortunately there is a solution!
“What a miserable person I am!
Who will rescue me from my dying body?
I thank God that our Lord Jesus Christ rescues me!
So I am obedient to God’s standards with my mind,
but I am obedient to sin’s standards with my corrupt nature.”
Romans 5:21
While alive in this life, all of us will continue to make mistakes, wrong choices,
and give into temptation, but the GOOD NEWS of the Gospel is that when you put yourself under the
sacrifice that Christ made for you on the Cross and repent of your sins, when you pass from this life into eternity,
your sins will be forgiven and forgotten. (Hebrews 8:12)
Have you asked Christ to deliver you from the curse of your fallen sin nature?
The Devil cannot make you sin, but you CAN make the decision not to be under the curse of it.
If not, make that decision today and ask and receive forgiveness for your fallen nature.
