Stand Up
Against Bullying!

“Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor
and the oppressed.”

1 John 3:1

A recent article on childhood bullying sadly related, “I have been bullied and harassed by so many. Every day of my life it’s a new story, a new lie, a new rumor; at school, at home, everywhere around me people would stop and stare at me, the girl with no home, no friends, only scars to keep me company and a blade to keep me sane. People would laugh, some would show sympathy, but no one ever helped me. Now I want to help, not just be a bystander. I know what that’s like. I love everyone and no one should feel that pain.”

Bullying comes in many forms and can be:

* VERBAL like teasing, name-calling,: threats, inappropriate sexual comments, or taunting
* SOCIAL like leaving someone out of a group or purposely embarrassing them publicly, spreading gossip, rumors, and/or on-line attacks
* PHYSICAL like hitting, kicking spitting, or rude gestures.
* POLITICAL (adults!) Deriding people for their beliefs

The Bible addresses bullying best in this verse:

“There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.”

Proverbs 6:16-19

If you experience or see bullying in the school system, say something! Reporting bullying to the proper authorities is one of the most important strategies we can use to prevent further bullying of children. Twenty-eight percent of students grades 6-12 say that have been bullied at school, yet only 20-30 percent of those who are bullied actually report when they are bullied. As Christians, we are called to seek what is right and defend the oppressed (Psalm 82:3-4, Isaiah 1:17). God, in his infinite wisdom, has established human authorities like the government, police, school administration, and parents to help make the situation right. You aren’t alone so do not be afraid to tell others what is going on, whether you are the one being bullied or are merely the observer. The righteous thing is to stand up for those who can’t or won’t defend themselves, however if a situation looks dangerous, always get an authority to help or call the police.

Bullying is wrong, period! As Christians, we must to act in love and kindness toward everyone, including those who wrong us. As Jesus also said, “Pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you.” As hard as it may seem, Love ultimately is the best way to solve the problem.
