Does your car have a motor or an engine? Well, in today’s computerized high-tech world it could be one or the other.
Although these words are often used interchangeably, they are actually very different. Planes, trains, and automobiles until recently have been powered by engines, but a new generation of electrically powered vehicles are now powered by motors. So what’s the difference and what does this have to do with your spiritual life?
Engines are internally powered, but motors are externally powered. A car generates power from the gasoline burning inside the engine, but electric cars get their power from an external battery. While that might sound similar, in both this example and in your spiritual life, there is an important spiritual parallel.
When we do things on our own volition, will, intellect, and power, we are acting like an engine, where WE are the source of all power and WE do it (as the old Sinatra tune says) “My Way,” but this is not God’s plan or will for how we are to live our lives.
Like the motor, which is useless and powerless without the battery, we must receive our power from the Holy Spirit and let Him work in us through us. It is His spirit that works within us to guide, comfort, and empower us to do HIS will in HIS strength.
Motors are actually stronger than engines! New electric cars are significantly faster, cleaner, and more reliable than internal combustion engines, but they must be ‘plugged into’ the power source of Christ. As Jesus said:
“ I am the vine; you are the branches.
If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5
Friend, be plugged into Christ and to “Be strong in the LORD and the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10) and let the Holy Spirit empower your life in you and through you.
