The End of Shame

“An adulterous woman consumes a man,
then wipes her mouth and says; ‘What’s wrong with that?’”

Proverbs 30:20

There was a time in society when someone did something wrong, there was both personal shame and public disgust. Sadly, that time has passed. Today famous people get caught in sex scandals, celebrities post sex videos, business people falsify financial statements and politicians openly lie under oath before Congress - and all this without any apparent consequence. In fact in some cases, they gain fame, notoriety, and even make money from their misdeeds.

This is no different than in today’s scripture where a prostitute plies her trade, enjoys a meal after work and says essentially, “What’s the Big DEAL??” According to the Bible, people that commit adultery or have illicit sexual relations feel exactly the same way. The “If it feels good – Do It” slogan of the 60’s has become the moral standard which many people live by.

While the sad reality is this is the currently acceptable way of the world, just because there is no personal shame or public push-back, does not mean that it is either OK or there will not be a consequence. The Bible says (to paraphrase) “Your payment and reward for sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) These secret (and not so secret) sins will have to be accounted for one way or another. Galatians 6:7 says “ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Humility, Honesty, and High Virtue are always in style – regardless what is popular or accepted:

“ So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.
At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing
if we don’t give up.”

Galatians 6:9
