Radical, Not Rational Love

“Greater love has no one than this,
that he lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

We love others, but if you think about it, we almost always do so rationally.

It is only natural to like others who meet our needs and that we get along with and gravitate towards people who make us feel good, those who do things for us, or where we feel a connection. In return we hope that others reciprocally respond positively to us, but if they don’t, what is the natural human reaction? That’s right--we refuse to continue to love them. That is the normal, 'rational' human response.

However Jesus shows us a totally different kind of love – a radical love that puts the needs and well-being of others before our own, regardless how they treat us. This is an unselfish love that requires a compassionate sacrifice of our time, energy, and resources. The Bible language in the New Testament for this word of ‘love’ is “agape” love, which is the highest form of true love that is selfless, giving and Godly. It is a love so deep that you would ‘take a bullet’ for a friend and put their needs above yours. Christ-driven love wants us to demonstrate this kind of love to others who may be incompatible, or who respond negatively or who may never do anything for us in return!

So where are you in this? Is your love rational or radical?
