What Does it Mean To be Holy?

But as He who called you is holy,
you also be holy in all your conduct,
because it is written,
"Be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:15-16

Holiness is not the way to Christ,
Christ is the way to Holiness.

The Hebrew word Holy is quodech which means to be holy, set apart, consecrated, sacred. However, does that mean we are - or can be - perfect in all our ways? In our sinful fallen world that is impossible, so the answer is no,so what can we do?

While we can never be sinless and purely “Holy” like Christ, perfection is something we as Christians must strive for by being conscientious of the world and it’s ways and not giving into sin. We are living in this fallen world and Jesus knows the challenges we face every day. He knows all our struggles, because He lived as a human and was tempted just like us. Jesus said in Matthew 26:41 that “The Spirit is Willing but the Flesh is Weak” Be aware always that our daily goal is to strive to follow along his way in our hearts and actions. What being Holy is about for us is setting yourself apart from the sin that is in the world and not participating with it. Holiness indeed comes from not being/acting holy, but following along the disciplined road leading to Christ that is the way TO Holiness. That is why true Christians are called DISCIPLES.

That sounds like a lot you ask and it IS! The Christian walk is not an easy walk. Our very nature pulls us to gravitate towards being lax, lazy, and falling into actions, thoughts or words we should not, but the Word promises us that we can resist evil (James 4:7) but this takes discipline. The only way is to stay on the PATH TO HOLINESS by faithfully following Christ.

Be his disciple, be displined, and as with God's help, seperate yourself from unholiness.
