When Your Idols
Become
Your God

“Go and cry out to the gods
You have chosen!
Let them rescue you
In your hour of distress!”

Judges 10:14

SlaveToCar In a small neighborhood market, a clerk was frustratingly ringing up my items with a scorning, bitter look on his face. He had something on his mind and seemed quite irritated.

With reservation I quietly asked, “Are you alright young man? Is everything OK??”

He suddenly stopped, looked up and angrily pointed out the window to a beautiful brand-new, shiny, top-of-the-line metallic blue Mustang and scowled, “I despise this job! All I ever do is work here Every Day And Night To PAY FOR THAT CAR!”

That which he IDOLIZED had unwittingly became his MASTER that he was now obliged to SERVE..

As today’s verse says, we can call out to these things of desire with the hope they will assuage our longing and desires, but they will not satisfy or rescue us out of that which we thought would serve or save us. When these idols become the focus of our desire, the need to have them can become all-encompassing to the point that we can be so obsessed with obtaining them that they become a type of god that we unwittingly worship - and like the dilemma of that young man - become a god that can rule over us.

Friend, having things we want or desire is not wrong, but as the TEN COMMANDENTS instructs, our #1 affection is to always put God FIRST - and never to put other things before Him.

In looking at your life, are there things, people or goals that have become more important than what is truly worthy of worship?
