When
Trying To Be
GOOD

“Not by works of righteousness
Which we have done
But according to HIS MERCY
He saved us”

Titus 3:5

ReflectionOfSelfWorks Famous Christian writer, scholar and theologian C.S. Lewis once aptly wrote:

“No man knows
how BAD he is
till he has tried very hard
to be GOOD.”

As admirable and worthwhile a goal to do good and live well in this life, despite our best efforts at some (and perhaps many) points we will fall down in minor (and sometimes major) ways. In retrospect, Lewis’ insightful comment becomes an accurate MIRROR in which we all can accurately see ourselves.

Perhaps one of the most prevalent misconceptions about salvation and gaining eternal life is precisely the OPPOSITE of today’s verse in Titus.

Instead, 'Good Deeds,' Honest Character, High Morals and following the 'Golden Rule' are the way you can save yourself, but if that were so then Christ dying on the cross, shedding his blood and redeeming the world from sin and death would be unnecessary — and this is where God’s mercy and grace apply.

You see, Mercy is NOT receiving PUNISHMENT that we DO deserve and Grace is receiving BLESSINGS that we do NOT deserve, and neither of those come from our self-efforts, but are God’s gift to us. It cannot be earned, but given without restriction to all that repent, honestly confess their sins, and believe that Christ is LORD and God.

Friend, salvation and forgiveness are free,
Not Earned.
