Bricklayers use a weight hanging from a long string
called a Plumb Line to verify that each
level of bricks is straight and true.
We also have a plumline to guide the trueness of our lives
that helps us measure that we
“...make straight the paths of our feet,”
as we travel along the “narrow way which leads
to eternal life” and that is the plumline
of God’s Word.
When we do not use God’s Word as our plumb line
but instead go by our own standards of
righteousness and conduct, it is easy for what
once was straight and true to go crooked.
This is what happened in the days of the prophet Amos.
The people become crooked and out-of-line
with God’s plumb line of righteousness,
holiness and godliness and had drifted so
far out-of-line from the Lord’s straight and true ways
that God was ready to give them up!
Friend, this is our natural human tendency, and unless we
continue to align ourselves with the plumb line of
God’s truth we too can go a crooked way.
So as you embark along the road of life,
are you staying in alignment with God’s plumline?
Or are you measuring how to live life
by another standard?
